Young Investigator Travel Awards

In an effort to provide more opportunities for younger physicians and scientists, the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO) has created a Travel Grant Program for eligible individuals to attend the SOHO 2021 Annual Meeting to be held September 8-11, 2021 at the Hilton Americas-Houston in Houston, Texas.

The travel grant program is just one of the ways in which SOHO supports training and career development in the field of hematologic oncology. Attending a major scientific meeting that focuses on hematologic malignancies is particularly important for young researchers since it allows them to interact with leading investigators, practitioners and other innovators in this important field. However, SOHO recognizes that travel funds may not be available early in an investigator's career. Therefore, postdoctoral researchers, young clinical researchers and graduate students may apply for travel awards to attend the annual SOHO meeting.

Qualifications and Grant Provisions

Postdoctoral researchers, young clinical researchers and graduate students may apply for travel awards to attend the annual SOHO meeting. Awardees are granted up to US $500 for air travel within the same continent, and up to US $1000 for long-haul air travel. In addition to air travel, hotel accommodations, meeting registration and ground transfers in Houston are paid in advance by SOHO. Other reimbursements may be processed after the meeting such as parking expenses. The recipient will be responsible for ground transportation (outside of airport transfers), meals (outside of those provided at the meeting) and extra room charges (room service, laundry, etc).

Travel grant recipients will share a room with one additional awardee or pay the cost difference for a single room (half of $155 per night plus tax). The SOHO travel grant covers the hotel room for the duration of the annual meeting. Additional hotel days must be paid by the awardee.

Eligibility

Members of SOHO, young investigators (within 10 years of specialty certification and/or clinical or doctoral-level degree conferral), fellows and scientists in training are eligible to apply. A candidate for the award must be a member of the society at the time of application. Note that the price for membership is FREE. To become a member go to https://www.sohoonline.org to sign up for your Free SOHO membership.

Travel Grant applicants must provide the following for their application to be considered:

  1. Submission of your curriculum vitae showing that you specialize in the field of hematologic oncology and that you are within 10 years of specialty certification, and/or clinical/doctoral-level degree conferral.
  2. Confirmation that an abstract will be submitted to the annual meeting. All travel grant recipients are required to submit an abstract to the meeting by June 1, 2021 (see https://www.soho2021.com/soho2021/abstracts for additional information on abstract submissions).

  3. A one-page, focused career statement (mini-biography), describing your interest in the SOHO travel award. Include your career goals and ambitions with an emphasis on research goals, areas of interest and most significant research accomplishments. In addition, include how you think this award will benefit you at this time in your career.
  4. Proof of SOHO membership. You may sign up for free SOHO Membership at https://www.sohoonline.org.
  5. Travel Grant Application (below).

Process

Awardees are selected by the SOHO Organizing Committee. Young investigators deemed eligible for the program are approved/awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of YIP awards per institution is limited to a maximum of three. In addition, the total number of awards is limited by the availability of funds. You will be notified via email if you have been awarded a travel grant.

If approved, additional information will be requested from awardees to coordinate flights, registration and transportation. See the travel guidelines for more information.
